Honors Mentorship allowed me to gain experience and first hand knowledge of what it is like being in the medical field. As this is what i still intend to pursue in my future, it was very helpful to be able to have this experience and see what my future would look like. By working at Northside I was able to see not only how what my future goal of being a physician does but how all the other roles and jobs affect each other and how they create an interconnected system all in the name of patient care. By being able to experience this it only further solidified that I do want to pursue a degree in medicine, though I was not able to experience pediatrics which is what I have always wanted to go into, being able to work with patients I discovered that is the path I wish to take in life.
Fortunately in my experience I did not change my future goals. Though for others it was different but all in all anyone who has done HMP will tell you. That being able to have this experience and be able to first hand work in your intended future career helps to either solidify or allow you to realize it is not what you wish to do. My internship also helped me decide where i wanted to go to college, when I decided for definite I am going to go into medicine I began looking at colleges not just known for my major (Biomedical Engineering) but also pre-med programs and medical school.
One thing I would be certain to tell future HMP students is to take full advantage of everything your mentor gives you. They want to teach you, so don't be afraid to ask questions stay late, do extra hours than are required. One time when I was in the lab, one of the pathologists asked if I wanted to see something cool. I spent the whole time with him and he explained all the different things he did as a pathologist as well as the current specimens he was looking at, then he looked at me and asked when I normally left. I told him I normally left at 4:30, then he looked at me and told me it was 6:30, I was so engrossed in learning I didn't realize how late I was there. So next year take advantage of every opportunity possible to get the most out of your HMP experience and allow yourself to learn the most possible.

Assignment 25:Abstract
Throughout the 2017-2018 school year, I have been interning at Northside Hospital
Forsyth and other Northside affiliates. I was attempting to determine the best way
that a student can help improve the quality of patient care. I spent the year learning
different aspects of patient care and seeing the interaction between all departments
of the hospital. I began in the medical laboratory where I saw how a physician orders
lab results and how the labs are then run and a result is determined and then sent
back to the ordering physician. Then I transferred to the rehabilitation department and
during my inpatient rehab rotation I was able to not just see how the inpatient rehab
works to promote patient care and recovery but also the nursing staff and physicians
and how they all come together for the best quality of care. During outpatient rehab I
was able to see how they promoted the recovery of patients after surgery or other
treatments that required physical or occupational therapy afterwards. Afterwards I
rotated to a general practitioner's office, where I am able to see exactly how a
general physician is able to make a difference, how they are the first line of
defense in your healthcare pathway. Throughout all of this I was able to come up
with a few ideas as to how a student could best help patient care and was also able to
see exactly what I wanted to do with my future and how I could make an impact as a
physician.

Assignment 23: Relevant Group Presentation Reflection
We watched the following video on youtube that gave advice on how to be more confident in a presentation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tShavGuo0_E One thing I plan on incorporating is preparing, looking over my project backwards and forwards so that I don't worry. Another thing they mentioned was posture, which I planned to stand for my presentation because I know it makes me feel better than sitting for when I sit I tend to slouch and be less physical which projects fear instead of confidence. Another thing they mentioned was not being fully serious but I don't think I am going to utilize that because I am presenting a presentation on how to improve healthcare which is a very serious topic and joking I don't think would be useful to my presentation. This video was pretty helpful by giving some ideas on how to start, I plan on making sure I connect why I did this internship to what I found out, connect what I want to do to what I have learned. They also recommended not to read off of cards, which I agree, I always present better when I do it off memory and allow myself to go off on appropriate tangents rather than strictly adhere to a script.

Assignment 21: Annotated Bibliography 3
Simpsons SQ, Peterson DA, O’Brien-Ladner Ar. Development and Implementation
of an ICU Quality Improvement Checklist, AACN Adv Crit Care, 2007
This article covers the improvements made in ICU care, the
main thing that has allowed a decrease in fatalities was implementing a
checklist for nurses and other personnel who interact with the patient. “The
checklist augments our daily, multidisciplinary quality rounds and informs all
personnel when important items have been missed.” This article is highly
reliable for it came from the National Institute of Health’s Website and is an
approved peer reviewed journal. I will use this article to help me, think of
other possible ways to improve patient care and to use examples of ways that
patient care has already been improved.

Assignment 19: Capstone Update
For the past week I have been gathering more information as to what patients and other health care personnel believe would be efficient ways to improve the quality of patient care. One thing Northside is doing that they believe will help is they are moving out patient rehab to a new building, and giving the old gym to the cardiorehab department allowing them to be able to do more. Another thing I have noticed is especially with geriatric patients having students around seem to improve their mood. When they see a high school student interested and participating they become interested and as a student we can ask questions and keep a conversation going that the professional personnel may have a hard time doing because they are focused on getting results. This dynamic allows the professional to treat and the student to communicate and help put the patient at ease helping with quality of patient care by improving efficiency and comfort for the patient. I have also begun constructing my website where I am going to attach this blog to as well as the annotated bibliography and others part of the capstone project.

Assignment 18: Annotated Bibliography 2
LYING-IN-HOSPITALS. (2001) Oxford
Illustrated Companion to Medicine 477
The Oxford University book
highlights the problems with lying prostrate for long periods of time while
being in the hospital. As how it increases your chance for sepsis, which is the
widespread of bacteria throughout the entire body. Commonly is Pneumonia
in older patients whom are restricted to the bed after surgery or
other illness, especially if always lying prostrate on their back. “In
1846 when working at the Allgemeines Krankenhaus in Vienna, Semmelweiss noted
that the maternal mortality in the ward attended by students was far higher
than in that staffed by nurses. He suspected the difference was due to the
students coming directly from the dissection room and infecting the parturient
women they examined. This is from the Oxford University which is a world
renowned leading medical university known for both its research and excellent
care. This article talks about the negative effects of staying
prostrate for long periods of time in the hospital and the increase of
infection that has been confirmed. Which I will use to support my ideas for
improvements in patient care.
