Throughout the 2017-2018 school year, I have been interning at Northside Hospital
Forsyth and other Northside affiliates. I was attempting to determine the best way
that a student can help improve the quality of patient care. I spent the year learning
different aspects of patient care and seeing the interaction between all departments
of the hospital. I began in the medical laboratory where I saw how a physician orders
lab results and how the labs are then run and a result is determined and then sent
back to the ordering physician. Then I transferred to the rehabilitation department and
during my inpatient rehab rotation I was able to not just see how the inpatient rehab
works to promote patient care and recovery but also the nursing staff and physicians
and how they all come together for the best quality of care. During outpatient rehab I
was able to see how they promoted the recovery of patients after surgery or other
treatments that required physical or occupational therapy afterwards. Afterwards I
rotated to a general practitioner's office, where I am able to see exactly how a
general physician is able to make a difference, how they are the first line of
defense in your healthcare pathway. Throughout all of this I was able to come up
with a few ideas as to how a student could best help patient care and was also able to
see exactly what I wanted to do with my future and how I could make an impact as a
physician.
